Education for Students with Special Needs
The Special Needs Program
Open to students of all ages, the Special Needs Program provides a nurturing environment where parents, students and teachers pray, learn and socialize. Currently the enrollment is in the forties, with students ranging in age from six to fifty-six.
Classes meet Saturday mornings from 10 to 11:30. After a Prayer Service in the church, each student works with a catechist, many of whom are parents of other students in the program. Students are actively involved in lessons that include sacramental preparation, Gospet lessons and recitation of prayers.
The program has many volunteers from the parish who sew costumes, help with art activities and Christian Service Projects, host Bake Sales, cook and donate items that enrich our lessons. The most important thing they do is consider the students as vital to the parish.
Activities on the yearly schedule include working at a booth during the parish picnic, participation in a Family Mass, a Christmas Pageant, a reenactment of the Last Supper, Brunch with the Easter Bunny, a May Crowning and A Family Fun Day. Also, the students return pop bottles to enable them to purchase socks for the needy and support various other service projects, such as sending cards to the home bound.
Students, catechists and volunteers of the Christ, Our Light! Special Needs Program are reminded often of the message of Pope Francis, "Wherever there is another living human beings, there is an opportunity for kindness."
